The Sensex closed at 18509, down 292 points or 1.55 percent and the Nifty ended at 5574, down 98 points or 1.73 percent.

DLF shares were up 1.5 percent after the company said it had raised Rs 240 crore by selling renewable energy assets, a non-core business.

Shares from the realty, auto, and oil & gas sectors were in demand, while those from the IT and FMCG sectors were slack.

The Nikkei rose 540.61 points to 13,175.15, extending the previous session's 2.2 percent gain after the BOJ decision. It was on track for its biggest one-day percentage climb in two years.
